Supporting a new vision for the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery at Royal Park

The Launceston Museum and Art Gallery Foundation supports the development of the fine and decorative art collections of the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.

The Foundation is the primary source of funds for the acquisition of works for these collections. Since 1985, through the generosity of our community and with the support of the Tasmanian Government, we have raised over $1.5 million with which we have acquired over 140 works to enhance the art collections of our Gallery.

A NEW VISION

With the vision and support of the Launceston City Council and the Tasmanian Government, there is an opportunity to create the city’s first dedicated public art gallery.

The QVMAG at Royal Park, restored to its Victorian splendour, will feature seven galleries dedicated to the display of fine and decorative arts and design. Our heritage collections will be set in galleries with 12-metre ceilings pierced to admit the changing light, with a mezzanine gallery reaching the height of the entire building. Spaces not seen since the 1960s will be reopened as galleries of striking beauty. Exhibitions drawn from the collections and touring shows will be housed in a new ‘white box’. Work from many different media such as installations, video and film will be included.

NEW OPPORTUNITIES
The Launceston Museum and Art Gallery Foundation is about to enter a new and exciting era to coincide with the redevelopment of the QVMAG at Royal Park which will re-open in 2010.

Funds are now sought to acquire further contemporary Tasmanian and Australian fine and decorative art to expand our significant modernist and colonial collections.

We invite you, through this new donation program, to assist us to create one of the great galleries of regional Australia and to help make it an institution of learning, inspiration and joy.
