In
A Collected View you will find works from
the QVMAG collection which are on display in Aspects of
Tasmanian Art, an exhibition which explores the two dominant
themes of Tasmanian art: landscape and portraiture.
This guide has been designed to provide visitors with a taste
of the historical and social environment of 19th century Tasmania,
as interpreted by artists working in the State during that
period.
The QVMAG had its foundations in the Launceston Mechanics’
Institute, established in 1842. When opened as the Victoria
Museum and Art Gallery in 1891 the building included a large
art gallery for the display of paintings and sculptures. Now,
after more than 100 years, this collection includes over 6000
works of art.
The exhibition Aspects of Tasmanian Art celebrates the response
of artists to the world they inhabit and acknowledges the
artists’ ability to document and define this place and
its people. Through an exploration of their engagement with
the natural environment and people of Tasmania, this guide
provides us with an opportunity to share in artists’
discoveries about this island.

Friendly
Mission: the Tasmanian Journals and Papers of George Augustus
Robinson, 1829–1834, edited by NJB
Plomley, was first published in 1966. This monumental and
controversial work has been widely recognised as an icon
of colonial and postcolonial culture, an often uncomfortable
meeting place between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples.
Friendly Mission is an account of travels and encounters
with the first Tasmanians as told by an Englishman of humble
origins who took on one of the most complex roles in colonial
Van Diemen’s Land. George Augustus Robinson imaged
himself as the ‘conciliator,’ a humanitarian,
but to the Lieutenant-Governor who employed him, he was
an agent within a governmental strategy for ridding the
settlers of a troublesome foe, and to some of those ‘brought
in’ he was a man who betrayed their trust. Responses
to Friendly Mission are as varied and intense today as they
were when this extraordinarily detailed version of experiencing
colonial encounter was first published.

Around every corner:
One of the most popular parts of the Museum’s photographic
collection features in a recently published book.
Around every corner: the photographs
of DG Wherrett Launceston Tasmania in the 1940s
includes 72 black and white images of Tasmanian-born Wherrett’s
documentation of the city. In response to an unusually early
concern about the disappearance of many old landmarks, Wherrett
systematically photographed inner city street corners over
a 10-year period during the war years. The series in the
book is part of a larger collection of 200 photographs showing
Launceston streets and associated architecture and reveal
much about everyday life in the 1940s.
The book was published in conjunction with an exhibition
of the same title, part of the four part series Launceston
through the eyes of artists and photographers.
This series has been shown at QVMAG at Inveresk throughout
2006.
