     430 (in genus list).
Rhinotus Hoffman 1980: 73. (In genus catalogue.)

Type species. Siphonotus africanus Cook, 1896, by monotypy. [Sierra Leone]
Distribution. Qld, WA; other Regions.
Included species:
    Rhinotus michaelseni (Attems, 1911) [WA]
    Rhinotus mjoebergi Verhoeff, 1924 [Qld]
and a small number of non-Australian species (Hoffman 1980: 73)

Note. 'The name Rhinotus was first proposed by Cook, 1896. A type species was designated as "R. africanus (Siphonotus africanus, Cook)". A diagnosis of the genus was not given, and a description of Siphonotus africanus Cook had not yet been published. The proposal of Rhinotus Cook, 1896, therefore, is not valid.
The description of Siphonotus africanus, cited above, appeared X.1896, but in that paper the name Rhinotus is not mentioned.
The only time that Cook mentioned Rhinotus again in connection with the specific name africanus was in the Brandtia paper, cited above. Unfortunately, the date of publication of Brandtia is unknown, and it is uncertain whether it was published before or after the description of S. africanus had appeared. Its date is fixed here preliminarily as 31.XII.1896. If it turns out that the cited page of Brandtia appeared before X.1896, i.e. before the appearance of the description of S. africanus, the name Rhinotus Cook is unavailable. In that case the authorship of Rhinotus would go to Pocock, 1906 (in: Gardiner (ed.), The Fauna and Geography of the Maldive and Laccadive Archipelagoes 2: 1045).' (Jeekel 1971: 43)
