Reginaterreuma tarkinensis Shear & Mesibov, 1995

(Order Chordeumatida, family Metopidiotrichidae)

R. tarkinensis

Reginaterreuma tarkinensis is Tasmania's largest chordeumatidan and can grow to nearly 20 mm in length. It is a conspicuous, fast-running millipede but was only first collected in 1974. R. tarkinensis is easily identified by its dark brown body colour with prominent pale 'knobs' carrying the most lateral of the six long setae on the back of each segment, and by its long, dark-banded legs.

This species prefers well-shaded wet forest up to ca. 1000 m elevation and can be remarkably abundant in lowland Nothofagus forest in the Northwest. In the eastern portion of its range R. tarkinensis has been found in Pinus radiata plantations (Bonham et al. 2002).
