Noteremus spp.

(Order Polydesmida, family uncertain)

Noteremus summusNoteremus infimus

LeftNoteremus summus
RightNoteremus infimus

This unusual genus of H+19 polydesmidans has only recently been recognised. The pore formula is 5, 7-18 as in Paredrodesmus and Procophorella. Noteremus gonopods with their terminal clusters of spiky structures (see images below) are very distinctive. The classification of Noteremus is uncertain and the genus is currently 'free-floating' within the suborder Dalodesmidea.

Noteremus summus is the largest H+19 species in Tasmania and the reddish adults reach ca. 22 mm in length. It is so far known only from the summit of Mt Weld, from 1100 to 1300 m elevation.

Noteremus infimus is a cave-dwelling species, like Atalopharetra clarkei and A. eberhardi. It is very common in the Junee-Florentine karst northwest of Maydena and is so far the only cave-adapted millipede known from the Junee-Florentine caves. Adults are pale and up to ca. 12 mm long.

Localities for Noteremus species: N. infimus (blue), N. summus (red). Scale bar = 100 km.
