Ovoviviparous 'Tasmania' spp.

'Tasmania' sp.

This is a group of species in an undescribed genus. Reid (1996) gives brief notes on two forms she calls 'Tasmania' sp. 1 and 'Tasmania' sp. 2. First collected at Kelly Basin, Port Davey by C.D. 'Deny' King in 1940 (TMAG specimen J899) and first reported by Winsor (1983) from the Franklin River.

'Tasmania' spp. are most commonly found in rotting logs and can be locally abundant in rainforest. Adults are 25-30 mm long at rest. When disturbed, 'Tasmania' spp. extend themselves and attempt to escape.

Localities for 'Tasmania' sp. 1 (red) and 'Tasmania' sp. 2 (blue) of Reid (1996), and of unidentified ovoviviparous species with 15 leg-pairs (gray).  The two localities in eastern Tasmania are vouched for by specialists, but no specimens from these localities are in public collections.  Scale bar = 100 km.
