John Douglas was born in Perth, WA. His parents were missionaries to the Australian aborigines. When he was six months old, they went to the Kimberley, spending the next three years on Sunday Island at the entrance to King Sound.

From the Kimberley, the family moved to the Nullabor Plain to a place called Ooldea. It was here that John started to develop his love for wildlife.  He spent many hours wandering the sandhills and plains with the aboriginal children, learning to recognize the tracks of beetles and lizards in the sand

The next three years John lived at Warburton Ranges in the middle of the Gibson Desert.  John was educated by correspondence schooling. Lessons were sent out every six weeks and his mother supervised him with the lessons, then returned to the teacher for marking.

John’s family moved to Kalgoorlie where John attended the Eastern Goldfields High School. At the age of 17, John went to live in Geelong where he started work at the Ford Motor Company as a trainee draftsman.

After a number of years of drafting, Army service and truck design at International Harvester, John changed careers to become a technical graphics teacher.  Thirty three years ago, John, together with his wife and two children, moved to Tasmania.

John taught at St. Patrick’s College for 24 years interspersed with two stints of teaching English in the Czech Republic. Since retiring, John has written two books on Tasmanian spiders and volunteers as an Honorary Research Associate at QVMAG, working on the museums spider collection.
