A Summer Season at QVMAG Royal Park like never before

Media release – Issued Thursday 17 December 2020

Just as our island home begins to look forward to sun-filled days and warmer nights, a new season is also emerging at the Art Gallery at Royal Park.

Curators are eagerly placing the final touches on a Summer Season line-up of exhibitions created to bring new perspectives to the art collections, celebrate our local stories, and delight in our creativity.

Wander into a leather craft dimension as you explore the enchanted imagination of legendary Tasmanian artist Garry Greenwood.

Pay tribute to pioneering female-identifying artists within the QVMAG collection as we shine the spotlight on their names, skill, and legacies in the world of the arts spanning across 200 years of creativity.

Admire the meticulous craftsmanship of local artist Alistair Mooney, as he shares a collection of life-like Huon pine carvings of Tasmanian bird species.

Study the raw reality of our the world we know with acclaimed artist Anne Zahalka as she reimagines decommissioned QVMAG gallery exhibition dioramas from years past, and creates a modern reflection of today's world.

City of Launceston Mayor, Albert van Zetten, said the new Summer Season exhibition launch at QVMAG Royal Park will be the perfect holiday-fun for Launceston locals and those travelling the state. "An exhibition line up of this scale is an exciting opportunity for the Art Gallery, and I know the team have been working incredibly hard behind the scenes for some months to launch this vision," Mayor van Zetten said.

"With four new exhibitions launching today, there is something for everyone to enjoy this summer with QVMAG."

Creative Arts and Cultural Services General Manager Tracy Puklowski said the Summer Season exhibition program will be a fantastic re-launch for the Art Gallery post COVID-19. "While COVID-19 peaked in Tasmania we were devastated to see our doors temporarily close to both the Art Gallery at Royal Park and Museum in Inveresk — particularly due to the incredible exhibition line up our teams were so excited to launch to our community," Ms Puklowski said.

"We're now rapt to be officially announcing our Summer Season exhibition program just in time for the end of the year — the Summer Season program will be first for QVMAG and we can’t wait to open the exhibitions to the public.

"We're unveiling four new exhibition offerings at Royal Park across a range of themes, and one in particular will feature recycled natural landscape dioramas from the original zoology gallery once featured at the Art Gallery.

"Many visitors will remember the original dioramas, so we're particularly excited about seeing them integrated back into our exhibition display in a new re-imaged way".

To explore our Summer Season will be to experience the Art Gallery at its finest. Spanning across four galleries, a trail of thought provoking exhibitions await to draw you into the creative, educational and diverse world of the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.

Join us for a summer of exploration at the Art Gallery — on show from 5 December at QVMAG Royal Park.
