Owned and run by the Natural History Museum in London, England, Wildlife Photographer of the Year celebrates the very best nature photography and photojournalism, using the unique emotive power of photography to inspire wonder and create advocates for the natural world.

Seen by millions of people all over the world, the images spark reaction and encourage us all to think differently about our impact on the natural world.

The exhibition’s stunning images allow visitors to experience nature in vivid detail and get up close to some of the world’s most extraordinary species, the lives they live and the challenges they face. The upcoming exhibition is known as #WPY59 as it represents the competition’s fifty-ninth year.

The competition is owned by the Natural History Museum, a world-renowned and trusted British institution and scientific research centre.

About the Exhibition and Competition

The winner of the fifty-ninth Wildlife Photographer of the Year award is announced at an awards ceremony held at the Natural History Museum on the evening of Tuesday 10 October 2023. This year, the exhibition showcases 100 acclaimed photographs from all the competition categories, and presents a huge variety of inspiring images capturing nature’s rich diversity.

The international judging panel of respected wildlife experts and nature photographers reviewed entries representing over 90 nationalities for the fifty-ninth competition. The jury seeks faithful representation of the natural world, and there are strict limits on what kinds of photographic post-processing and manipulation are acceptable.

The Tour

After the awards ceremony and the opening of the flagship exhibition at the Natural History Museum, the exhibition tours nationally and internationally, attracting visitors around the world in locations including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, China, New Zealand and the USA.

History of the Competition

The origins of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition go back to 1965, when BBC Wildlife Magazine was called Animals and the three available categories attracted around 600 entries. Even then, it was the leading event of its kind for nature photographers. It grew in stature over the years and in 1984, the competition as it is known today was created.

The competition is now solely owned and developed by the Natural History Museum, London.
