Contribute to an ongoing project celebrating shared storytelling and hands-on creativity.

Be part of an evolving artwork and add your story to the Possum Skin Cloak.

Possum skin cloaks are a continuing tradition for many Aboriginal communities and are often inscribed with personal and family stories.

This workshop continues the journey of the Possum Skin Cloak at QVMAG that began with our Wrapped in Culture touring exhibition in 2021.

In this hands-on workshop, each participant will use a pyrography tool to burn a personal design, symbol or narrative into a square of possum skin—creating a representation of their story.

These new squares will then be sewn onto the cloak in the final workshop, with the results unveiled at our NAIDOC Week morning tea on Sunday 6 July.

During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to record an explanation of their story. These recordings will be used to create an accompanying video displayed in the Museum at Inveresk foyer with the completed cloak.

No previous pyrography experience is needed—guidance and all materials will be provided. Come along, connect with others, and leave your mark on a growing tapestry of stories.

NAIDOC Week is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture, and achievements. 2025 marks a powerful milestone: 50 years of honouring and elevating Indigenous voices, culture, and resilience.

This year's theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy, celebrates not only the achievements of the past but the bright future ahead, empowered by the strength of our young leaders, the vision of our communities, and the legacy of our ancestors.
