Join us for an inspiring afternoon of art, dialogue, and poetry at the Art Gallery at Royal Park.

Explore Conversations, QVMAG's exhibition that invites you to consider the potential relationships between objects from the collection. This special event invites you to experience the exhibition through the eyes of both a curator and a poet.

Curatorial introduction
Kate Davies, QVMAG Assistant Curator Visual Art and Design, will introduce the concept behind Conversations, offering insights into the curatorial process and the artworks selected. Learn how the exhibition was shaped and how the idea of “conversation” emerges visually and conceptually across the gallery space.

Participant reflections
Following the introduction, participants will be invited to respond to the exhibition in their own way—whether by sharing a thought, sketching a response, or even offering a single word. These reflections will help shape the next part of the event.

Poetic response
Poet Kim Nielsen-Creeley will then respond to the group’s reflections with a live poetic interpretation, weaving together the voices of the participants and the spirit of the artworks into a unique creative expression.

From Conversations to deeper connections
This event is designed to spark meaningful conversations, deepen engagement with the collection, and celebrate the power of creative interpretation. Whether you're a history buff, art lover, poetry enthusiast, or simply curious, this is a chance to experience the gallery in a new and thought-provoking way.

About the poet

Kim Nielsen-Creeley was born in Queenstown, a mining town in Lutruwita/Tasmania. Her poems have a keen sense of place, responding to landscape and history. Kim has an honours degree in fine art, and she continues her practice of drawing on paper, recently incorporating poetry beneath the surface.

She has performed her poems on local and national radio, and is involved in slam poetry throughout the state with Launceston-based Words United Inc. She likes to read in the local scene, and has committed her latest book to audio, which will be released later in 2025. Extraction (2024), published through Walleah Press, her first full book of poetry, was long listed for the Tim Thorne Prize for Poetry in the 2025 Tasmanian Literary Awards, and was highly commended by the judges.

About the exhibition

What makes a conversation meaningful? How do we connect with others, and what shapes the exchange?

Explore the essence of connection through the exchange of ideas and observations in Conversations. This exhibition presents thoughtfully curated pairings of objects from the QVMAG collection—some unexpected—to encourage you to consider how objects relate to one another, whether through their similarities or their contrasts.

At its core, Conversations examines what creates dialogue, highlighting the importance of listening, responding, and engaging in shared exchange and fresh perspectives.

We invite you engage in this unique selection of Conversations—discover and create your own connections and stories to share.

"A conversation is a work of art with more than one creator." – John Armstrong
