The Royal Society of Tasmania Northern Branch presents a lecture by Dr Tony Webster: Landscape, Geology and the British Settlement of the Tamar Estuary.

Much has been written about the early history of European settlement of the Tamar Estuary. However, to the presenter’s knowledge, there has been little discussion of the ways that its complex geology and landforms influenced the pattern of European settlement in the early 19th century. Through the integration of historic maps and charts; 3D digital terrain modelling and modern geological information, this presentation will show how the landscapes of the Tamar Valley controlled patterns of development that remain in place today.

Tony is a Hobart-based consulting geologist who specialises in structural geology. He is the author of The Foundation of Australia’s Capital Cities: Geology, Landscape and Urban Character, which discussed the geological influences on the earliest development of Australia’s state capitals.

He is currently writing sequels about Canberra and some of the most important regional Australian cities. Tony has led geological field trips of the CBDs of Brisbane, Hobart, Sydney (‘The Rocks’), Perth and Adelaide.
