The upcoming school holidays welcomes a bursting program of family activities at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.

Officially launching on 30 September, the QVMAG Holiday Program will have young minds exploring what it would take to live in space, how to pin insects, techniques to paint in watercolour, and how to make sculptures using wire and foam.

QVMAG Senior Curator of Natural Sciences, Dr Alfonsina Arriaga Jiménez, said she was looking forward to introducing young citizen-scientists to the world of insect pinning through her workshop sessions.

“Programs such as this are a fantastic and fun opportunity for kids to discover how researchers learn about the natural world,” Dr Arriaga Jiménez said.

“Our bug pinning workshop is a great way to share with families why museum specimens are so important for research, conservation and biodiversity.

“Our Holiday Program is a fun experience for families during the school holidays, but also a great outreach opportunity to engage families in science education.

“We might just inspire the next generation of scientists in Tasmania through educational programs such as this, which is a brilliant thing.”

With both a morning and afternoon session, this hands-on workshop at the Museum at Inveresk will be led by Dr Alfonsina Arriaga Jiménez as she guides participants through an insect pinning workshop, learning about the world of entomology and museum collections.

QVMAG Education Officer George Perkins said the upcoming Holiday Program is guaranteed to keep young minds busy these school holidays.

“It’s always a lot of fun developing our Holiday program series at QVMAG,” Perkins said.

“Whether we’re creating learning activities based on exhibitions on display, delving into our collection, or simply creating fun, interactive experiences for kids, there’s something for all ages to enjoy.

“We’re always looking for new topics and themes to build programs around for families, especially where we can support informal education across our collection pillars of the arts, history, archives and natural sciences. Families should get in fast to avoid missing out on this popular program!"
