Live woodcarving on display this weekend at QVMAG

A live woodcarving display will be featured this Saturday 4 February at the Queen Victoria Art Gallery at Royal Park with artist Carol Russell.

In this free demonstration, Russell will demonstrate various techniques while talking about her process and whittling some butter knives, spoons and small sculptures using salvages materials.

Set to the backdrop of the exhibition Jimmy Possum: an unbroken tradition, Russell’s wood carving art practice repurposes otherwise discarded timber, something that aligns to the Jimmy Possum tradition of ‘making do’ with materials at hand.

Russell is a self-taught woodworker who has been making pieces for most of her adult life.

She began in 1987 with small furniture projects and antique restoration, spending time in workshops and gleaning what she could from craftspeople who were prepared to share their knowledge.

The Australian Wood Review have published several of her articles on tools and woodworking techniques.

This event is a free drop-in session between 12.30 to 3.30pm on 4 February 2023. Visitors are welcome to stay for the full duration, or as a short drop-in experience.
