That's a wrap: blockbuster dinosaur exhibition closes this Sunday
It's the final countdown for the blockbuster touring exhibition Six Extinctions on display at the Queen Victoria Museum at Inveresk, with prehistoric history-lovers of all ages urged to make the most of its final days on display.
On show at the Museum at Inveresk since 15 March 2025, thousands of visitors have enjoyed exploring extinction events over 485 million years of Earth’s history through an incredible collection of replica fossils.
Six Extinctions delves into ‘The Big Five’ events which drastically reshaped life on Earth: the Ordovician, Devonian, Permian, Triassic and Cretaceous extinctions.
Each historical event was driven by geological and environmental factors like volcanic activity, meteor impacts and climate shifts. These extinction events devastated ecosystems but also paved the way for new evolutionary adaptations.
The exhibition, developed by Gondwana Studios, also examines the ongoing Holocene extinction event— the Sixth Extinction in which we now live—driven largely by human activities such as habitat destruction, climate change and pollution.
City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the exhibition has been loved by locals and visitors exploring Launceston.
"It's always so great to see the reaction of our visitors as they explore new exhibitions at QVMAG, and Six Extinctions has been an absolute drawcard for all ages," Mayor Garwood said.
"Since opening in March, over 46,200 visitors have made a trip to the Museum at Inveresk where this exhibition has been on display.
"We've had locals, tourists and schools all enjoy the themes this exhibition explores, and it really highlights how popular QVMAG remains as a must-visit destination for our community and visitors exploring Tasmania.
"If you're yet to make the trip to this exhibition, or you've been planning to visit one last time before it closes, here's your final chance--don't miss it."
