For Hobart-based artist Jeewan Suwal, painting is more than a practice – it’s a way of being. “Nature around me has always been an inspiration for my painting,” he says. The ever-present Mount Wellington guides his artistic vision, shaping the landscapes and moods that emerge on his canvases.

Jeewan works primarily with acrylics, building his abstract compositions through layers of paint that range from transparent to opaque. “I would say my technique in painting is more expressionist and colour-field. My paintings are more emotional than representational,” he explains. Each layer reflects the inevitable transformations in nature, capturing not just what is seen, but what is felt.

Painting has been a lifelong passion. “I have been painting since my childhood, and I was drawn to it insanely. Painting heals me, it makes me feel complete and gives meaning to my life. I take painting as my part of life,” he says. His work invites viewers to engage with the unseen beauty of nature and the personal resonance of place.

At RISE, Jeewan hopes people will experience more than a visual image. “The viewers will have opportunity to drive into unseen and unrealised beauty of nature through my painting. They may relate some part or moment of their memories about places in their life.” His canvases become a bridge between artist, nature, and audience, inviting reflection and connection.

Being part of RISE is a moment of gratitude. “It’s a great honour and pleasure to be a part of this project. I am grateful to QVMAG.” And his advice to other artists is grounded in community: “I would just say, let’s work together.”

Through his layered canvases, Jeewan Suwal translates the complexity of nature into emotional landscapes – bridging memory, place, and personal reflection.
