For Hobart-based artist Halima Bhatti, the landscapes and culture of Tasmania shape every line she draws. “Hobart’s rich history and growing creative community offer both inspiration and space for reflection,” she says. Mountains, waterways, and skies echo the fluid, meditative forms of her Arabic calligraphy, guiding her practice and connecting her to both place and community.

Halima uses Arabic calligraphy to tell stories when words are not enough. “Through Arabic calligraphy, I express what words alone often cannot – emotions, cultural memory, and spiritual reflection,” she explains. Her work blends flowing script with symbolic imagery, turning text into a visual language that speaks across borders, cultures, and generations.

Her inspirations are rooted in heritage, faith, and art history. Sacred Qur’anic verses, classical calligraphic masters, and the natural world all inform her practice. “Ultimately, my inspiration comes from the desire to create work that speaks to the heart, invites contemplation, and carries beauty with purpose,” Halima says.

Halima’s process is intuitive and freehand, allowing the script to evolve naturally. She often incorporates figurative or symbolic shapes, creating a dynamic balance between movement and intention. Each piece is both a visual story and a space for meditation, inviting viewers to slow down and engage.

Her journey into calligraphy began with a personal need to speak her truth and challenge assumptions. “Through Arabic calligraphy, I discovered a powerful way to express the complexity and beauty of my heritage beyond assumptions or simplified narratives,” she reflects. The work is a means of dialogue, resilience, and reflection – both personal and communal.

For RISE, Halima hopes her work will invite viewers to pause and reflect. “I want the calligraphy to invite them into a space of calm and contemplation… I hope people recognise the dignity, strength, and spiritual depth that often go unnoticed.”

Her advice to emerging artists? “Trust the uniqueness of your voice and stay true to your vision… embrace challenges as opportunities to grow, while remaining curious and open to new experiences.”

Through Halima Bhatti’s calligraphy, words become form, and form becomes connection – a gentle yet powerful way to communicate culture, faith, and humanity.
