Three days, three immersive workshops. Join us in the lead up to International Women's Day at the Art Gallery at Royal Park.

About this event

This is one of three events held in the lead up to International Women's Day at the Art Gallery at Royal Park. Starting with an interactive tour of the exhibition Herself, featuring works from female artists within the QVMAG collection, this workshop will guide you through the stories of works on display with Aboriginal artist, Vicki West, while sharing the stories of works on display with a focus works created by Aboriginal women.

Following on from the tour, you'll be guided through an interactive workshop with Vicki as you learn how to make head adornment with fibre.

Participants are invited to bring something along to the workshop that carries a personal memory or holds personal significance, to be interwoven in the headdresses.

Attendees are encouraged to bring flowers and grasses from their garden to personalise their headdress alongside the supplies available on the day.

Share the memories behind your object on the day, or keep them within the fibres, as we undertake an intimate journey of conversation supported by a circle of women lead by Vicki.

Our guest speaker/facilitator

Vicki West is a Tasmanian Aboriginal artist of the trawlwoolway people from the north-east coast region and QVMAG Aboriginal Education Officer.

Vicki’s arts practice includes large scale installations incorporating multiple elements, smaller scale sculptural works, jewellery, textiles, painting and new media. She has a strong local, national and international exhibition record.

She draws on traditional Tasmanian Aboriginal cultural practices and materials to create contemporary artworks that explore and celebrate cultural survival in the face of continuing colonial myths of the extinction of her people. In her own words ‘we are still here’.
