The sound of women: with Karlin Love and Suzanne Turner

Three days, three immersive workshops. Join us for International Women's Day at the Art Gallery at Royal Park.

About this event

This is the final event in the International Women's Day series. Starting with an interactive tour of the exhibition Herself, featuring works from female artists within the QVMAG collection, this workshop will guide you through the stories of works on display and the women behind them, as musicians Karlin Love and Suzanne Turner respond through live music.

The workshop will lead into an interactive spoken word activity based on the International Women's Day theme for 2022 #BreakTheBias

All participants inspired by the stories from Herself will join a women’s circle and will be invited to share their stories of the role models in their lives, or personal lived experiences with bias to the group.

The workshop will aim to transform the shared experiences into words and simple sentences. Then, in a spoken word manner, the sound of shared thoughts will be interwoven with the improvised music by Kalin and Suzanne to transform the stories in one sound.

Our guest speaker/facilitator

Karlin Love

Karlin Love (B.A., B.Mus., M.A., PhD) is a US-born composer and performer living in Tasmania. She moved to Australia in 1989 to take the position of woodwind lecturer at the University of Tasmania in Launceston where she taught clarinet, saxophone, theory, composition and improvisation until 1997, and taught music education (composition, music technology, guitar, and primary curriculum music) through 2010.

Still residing in Launceston, she now works on research projects investigating advanced composition and performance teaching and learning, and is a freelance performer, composer, curator, and teacher.

Karlin aims to gently extend and expand traditional sound worlds and provoke greater democracy in music-making. She has created and performed works for MOFO, TenDays on the Island, JunctionArts, and other festivals and series. Her works have been recorded by Clarity clarinet quartet, The Chordwainers leather sculpture ensemble, and the University of Tasmania Wind Ensemble.

Suzanne Turner

A music educator, performer, collaborator and improviser Suzanne has been part of the Launceston music community for over 35 years.

As a violin and clarinet player she has rehearsed and performed with many ensembles, most recently the Launceston Philharmonic Orchestra, chamber ensembles Camerata Obscura, and Bits of String Quartet.

She is one of the owners and caretakers of a Garry Greenwood playable leather sculpture (Bass Bowhorn) and has performed with the Chordwainers and Tasmanian Leather Orchestra at festivals including Junction Arts and MONA FOMA, and other events. She has coordinated the Live Music at Launceston General Hospital program and is currently involved in Music at the Library events.

Suzanne has spent many years as a school-based classroom music teacher, and now takes these skills to the wider community as a founding member of the Launceston Improvised Music Association, leading workshops specifically for children, creating improvised music performances and engaging in community focused music experiences and collaborations based on the art of improvised music making.
