Emerging from the windswept coastlines of the northeast of lutruwita/Tasmania, Mali Davis' contemplative digital work explores the deep and unspoken ties between people and place.

Rooted in an intimate connection to the environment, the quieter you are, the more you can hear serves as both personal meditation and public call for reverence and preservation. Through minimalism and stillness, Mali creates space for the landscape to speak.

Inspired by local artists like Lisa Garland and Nick Green, Mali's work draws strength from subtlety—inviting viewers to listen closely and reflect deeply. Her work champions themes of environmental conservation, connection, and identity.

On being part of ArtRage, Mali shared, “It’s an honour to be included in an exhibition that has inspired me for years. I’m grateful my work can now speak to others the way ArtRage artists once spoke to me.”

the quieter you are, the more you can hear was awarded Examiner’s Choice for the Art Studio Practice subject. TCE Examiner Jack Robert-Tissot shared: “Behind the imagery, painstakingly gathered field recordings of birdsong, waves, wind and animal life are layered with poetic narration by Adam Thompson. The combination is hypnotic and transportive; you are made to pause and listen.

“The work deals directly with the complex interplay between self and the natural world. Stewardship, renewal and connection all bubble close to the surface.

“Mali’s work is precocious, demonstrating a confidence and maturity in making that is rarified in any context. With outstanding support work, tremendous commitment, and technical mastery, Mali’s portfolio represents an exceptional accomplishment that goes beyond the expectations of the course.”

Mali hopes to continue fostering creative spaces, pursue a career in the arts, and stay grounded in her connection to place.

Her advice to future students: “Stay true to yourself and your artistic vision for your work.

“Back yourself and your ideas and believe in your work in the face of often overwhelming opinions, as nobody knows your work quite like you do.”
